DNA – The Latest Weapon in Combating Art Fraud

Artists, gallery owners, collectors and art experts will have a new tool in the age old problem of detecting art forgeries – DNA.  The New York Times reports that a new authentication system is being developed that would allow artists to “sign” their works using synthetic DNA.  The DNA, when scanned, would provide an encrypted link that would identify and authenticate individual pieces of art.   The new authentication technology is being developed by the Global Center for Innovation at the State University of New York at Albany.  Funding for the project was provided by the ARIS Title Insurance Corporation which specializes in art.
